Susan Wardle's "Things of Beauty" is probably the outstanding piece in this anthology. The first page is a flurry of new language, orientating the reader gently but powerfully to a deep and colourful new world. In this story the major social division is between ordinary society and the Misfits, the outcasts, who are struggling to escape the city in which they live. A major achievement in this piece is the character of Brom, a mute who communicates through gestures. But the strength of this story is also in the complexity of the action-heavy plot and the fast-paced, staccato tone that drives the narrative to very good effect.
