Let the reader work. You don't have to give every action.
If you describe unimportant things you give them a weight they don't necessarily deserve.
A character developes when there is another character on the page for them to interact with. Characterisation can then be shown through dialogue and interactions.
A short story should have 3 plot lines or layers.
Reversals - At times characters or situations must reverse - do the opposite of what the reader expects.
There was lots of other stuff as well - but these were the bits that resonated with me.
